Hello friends,

It's been such a wonderful coming of Autumn these past couple of weeks. The picture above was taken early on the morning of the first freeze while the mists danced and played among the trees. The meadow was just perfectly peaceful that morning. Our windows stay closed now on these chilly days, but Mother Nature keeps rollin' on. Green turns to gold then just simply falls away and the earth begins her big in-breath. You can feel it up here in the mountains, that deep sigh amongst the pines, but only if you stop and get real quiet. Quiet enough to feel the changing of the season as it slips through with the mist.

News from the Farm: Well, to finish the story, after careful observations and much converstation we've finally succeeded in deterring the ever elusive egg thief. it was a simple matter of patching some holes in the walls of the hens' nesting box room. the magpies aren't hanging around much anymore and we collect more eggs each day. Of course, the hens should start slowing down now that some cold weather has arrived.

Please check out our farm gallery at http://www.peacefulmeadowfarm.org/gallery to see some New Pictures.

Hello Friends,

The hornets have moved into our house! Our windows remain open most of the time, no screens to catch the wandering bugs. So, the pesky little yellow and black creatures come in to sip on coconut nectar and honey left on the counter after breakfast. When they buzz my head in the kitchen it reminds me that the summer's end is fast approaching. I think they must know winter is coming, trying to stock up on food for the long, cold spell under ground. The aspen leaves have started to turn, the meadow colors are turning from vibrant green to a soft golden hue, and chilly nights come more frequently. Yes, summer is nearing it's end and our minds begin to turn towards the coming Fall and Winter. I guess if we were without our big grocery stores with their Mangos and Avocados in mid-winter, then we might be like the hornets. Storing as much of this beautiful summer bounty into jars for our own long, cold winter spent inside. I wonder how we would fare left out in the woods with only our bare human skin and cleverness to keep us warm?

We caught wind that Steve and Gretchen, our good friends from over the hills and across the way, might perform some improvised puppet shows sometime around mid morning in the hay barn.

News from the Farm: Our investigations into the elusive egg thief have finally paid off! Col snuck into the nesting box room this week and was greeted with a flurry of wing beats and squawking from above. The thief was caught! The beautiful, yet clever magpie was in the hen house making mischief. So, the children put a chair in front of the entrance to deter flying creatures (while allowing our hens a path into the room). So, we'll see if that takes care of this summer long problem of missing eggs.

In other news, the children found some little bats hanging from the rafters in our hay barn this week. Maybe they'll still be "hanging around" on Saturday, so feel free to ask one of our children where the bats are.

Please check out our farm gallery at http://www.peacefulmeadowfarm.org/gallery to see some New Pictures.

Life around me right now is quiet and peaceful, perfect in this moment. The sun is up, little feet are softly moving about above me and another day begins. Beautiful.

What makes us till this soil? Why put in so much effort to grow these veggies with their constant need for attention, weeding and such? Well, it has to do with peace, with quiet and with how to go forth in this crazy world we live in. They say that world peace begins with inner peace. Each of us has to find our own way towards a peace within ourselves so that we can then start radiating that outwards to the people around us. Good day to you all,

Our llamas are amazing animals, so aloof yet sweet, delicate yet fierce, and ever ready to warn of dangers approaching the farm. We've had 4 or 5 bear visits this year and each time we were warned of their approach by one or both of the llamas. Their warning call is like some sort of crazy high pitched cross between a horse whinny and an old witch cackling. so, whenever we hear that distinctive sound we know there must be a bear about.

Last night, col, allison and I were woken up by an erie late night whinny out in the meadow. col and i ran downstairs, grabbed the big flashlight and listened quietly at the open window to see if we could hear the call again. it came, and we realized that it was in fact a horse whinny, our little pony Alo was upset about something. so, i pulled on my shorts, grabbed a jacket and went down to the meadow to see what was happening. of course, in my mind i couldn't help but remember the last late night call from one of our animals and the big (very big!) black bear that was lumbering by right in the exact place i was now walking! the horse and donkey were upset alright, but not by some vicious man eating wild creature of the night, but simply because of their missing companion Valantino (our chief donkey). I searched the meadow with my light and never saw the missing one, and finally decided to get back to sleep, lest one of those night creatures were to come looking for me! All was back to normal this morning when Col went to feed the animals. Valantino was standing at the gate to the horse pen with a mischievious grin, happy to have spent the night wild and free roaming the open meadow.

The News from the Farm this week is all about weeds, specifically the wild amaranth. We've been busy pulling and cleaning those beds, but the amaranth is one pesky critter! If anyone is interested in pulling some weeds this saturday during the farm stand, we'll gladly trade veggies for weed work!

Please check out our farm gallery at http://www.peacefulmeadowfarm.org/gallery to see some New Pictures.

Good morning friends,

Late last night while working, my children, dogs and animals asleep, the coyotes came. They howled and barked and cried out to the night while Pancho and Olive woke and quivered. The dogs kept looking at me, saying with their eyes, "Let me out there papa and we'll run them off...". I just listened and wondered what in the world had those beautiful creatures of the night so worked up. Well, the children went down this morning to let the animals out and there was not a single sign of coyote. Like ghosts in the night, the wild things danced and covorted and left nothing but the memory of their song. Good thing they don't eat gardens!

The News from the Farm this week revolves around new crops and more rain. Yep, we've had more rain and the garden is absolutely loving it. The last time we had to irrigate was back in June, and all this water has given the plants a vibrant growth spurt. This week we plan to have some peas, baby turnips, a few peppers, and all the usual greens. And, of course we'll be giving away free bundles of wild amaranth!

Please check out our farm gallery at http://www.peacefulmeadowfarm.org/gallery to see some New Pictures.

Good day friends and neighbors,

Another beautiful day here, watching a dark and ominous cloud roll over Forsythe Rock. Will it bring life giving rain, nourishing all these beautiful food bearing crops? Or, will it bring with it Mother Nature's harsh and damaging pellets of ice? Either way, life and all that it brings is such a wonderous unfolding to behold. We carve out our little plot of land, cultivating these fragile plants in an effort to share the bounty with our friends, our neighbors. Sharing the fruits of our labor and love for pristine, life enhancing veggies. Why do we do it, why toss the dice and gamble with nature's unpredictable force? Well, we love what these high mountain vegetables do for our body and we love to see our community smiling and chatting it up with each other. All in celebration of this little patch of soil and the goodness growing up towards the sun. Bring it on Mother Nature, bring on your beautiful, awesome electrically charged life force. Let our veggies grow!

The News from the Farm this week once again revolves around the ever elusive egg thief. The children have been stepping up their egg collecting frequency. Col hung out in the barn the other day, reading a book, trying to see who the thief was. After a good while watching, the prevailing theory is that the big birds are sneaking in and flying away with our lovely eggs. However, we haven't yet seen a bird flying out of the barn with an egg stuck on its beak! So, until we have proof, we'll continue to keep a watchful eye on the trees around the chicken coop. Perhaps there is some other little creature bold enough to snatch eggs away from our hand pecking, broody hen Juniper.

We're trying to upload pictures each week after the farm stand, so please check out our farm gallery at http://www.peacefulmeadowfarm.org/gallery to see some New Pictures.
Hello Friends,

Thank you to all our friends for coming out on Saturday, it was a great opening to our season. The veggies are growing fast with all this rain, and so are those weeds! Thanks Gretchen and Quill for coming over this week to help weed the bean patch. Usually the soil here in Colorado can be a bit sluggish, but with this much moisture the plants are thriving. We were expecting to have a bountiful harvest this week, but alas, the monster thunderstorm that rolled across our area on Tuesday brought lots of hail. We survived without too much damage, but lots of the more tender greens were battered and torn. We expect everything will grow out of the damage in the next couple of weeks and we still have plenty of veggies that survived the torrential storm.

Other than the big thunderstorm this week there is not much News from the Farm other than our daily battle with the mystery egg thief. The kids are working hard to discover where some of our eggs are going each day; we suspect it might be jays, ravens or magpies. So, we'll keep you posted on what we find and how we deal with it.
